A Blog of Building Happy Dogs with a Job
Hello my Paw-sitive viewers!
I have had a deep love for dog training and helping people redirect unwanted behavior and/or training their dogs to do certain jobs or tricks for a better human/companion relationship. It all started when I was 8 years old and I was just starting to show my dog, Tuffy, in 4-H. Starting young, I learned to really look at body language and to put myself in my dog's shoes so that I can be a better problem solver in training.
After graduating high school and then getting my BS in Elementary Education, I moved back to my family farm in my grandma's old house right next to my dad. I now am a volunteer in the summer by coaching local 4-H kids on how to train their dogs for the 4-H Dog Show! I have also helped many other people with issues they might be having with their dogs.
When I came home and started working with kids and other people with their dogs, it has really opened my eyes as to how many people are having issues with their dogs and nowhere to turn for help...especially in our rural area where the nearest dog trainers and classes might be a couple hours away. Then, these issues spiral out of control to the point where it puts a strain on families so they take the dog to shelters to be re-homed because there is no one to turn to for help on the issue! I then started reading about dogs that were at our local shelters and realized that SO MANY of these issues can be easily resolved with consistency and training.
I am going to work with actual dogs with actual goals for those dogs and record the progress and setbacks that take place. Working and training a dog takes a lot of problem solving, consistency, and patience. You have to build an understanding of body language and how things are viewed from the dog's point of view. I will share some basic handling tips, advice, and products that have helped me and I also hope you learn along with me as we go!
